Perez: "Best in the world" Ronaldo wants Real Madrid extension

The club’s president says the Portuguese superstar is better than Lionel Messi and is adamant the player wants to extend his contract at the Bernabeu for many years to come
Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world and is completely committed to signing a new contract atReal Madrid, according to Florentino Perez.

The Blancos president attempted to quell speculation linking the former Manchester United star with a summer exit and insisted he was the world’s top star even when taking Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi into account.

Ronaldo’s contract at the club expires in the summer of 2015 and while reports had suggested he was not keen on a renewal, Perez insists this is far from the case.

“I am going to be as clear as possible. My aim, Cristiano's aim, and the aim of all Real Madrid fans is that he carries on playing here for many years to come,” the president said to Marca. “When so many people want the same thing then it usually turns out to be the case. I myself and Real Madrid both want that.

“The player, Cristiano Ronaldo, also wants that. Without a shadow of a doubt, that is what Cristiano wants too.

“We are always talking with him. If you are asking me if we've talked about money, then the answer is no because the time isn't right yet. That will have to wait until after he comes back from holiday.”

Perez insists Real Madrid do not just want Ronaldo in their side to rival Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and believes his player ranks above the Camp Nou star.

“Real Madrid do not want Ronaldo just because Barca have Messi. We want him for the duration because he is the best player in the world, Messi or no Messi.”

Perez added that he felt the media frenzy surrounding the forward’s future was over the top considering the player’s contract was still 24 months away from reaching a conclusion, and tipped Ronaldo to match the accomplishments of the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano before his time at the club is over.

He added: “We want him and what is more we already have him. He has two years left on his contract. Anyone would think he was leaving tomorrow. What we would like is for him to stay even longer.

“The future of our project revolves around him. Teams always depend largely on one great player. At one time it was Di Stefano, later on it was [Zinedine] Zidane. Now it is clear the focus is on Ronaldo. There is nothing better than having the best player in the world in your team.

“We believe Ronaldo will go down in the club's history as being on a par with Di Stefano.”
