Rubin 3 Chelsea 2

  • FERNANDO TORRES continued his good form as Chelsea made the Europa League semi-finals despite a shoddy defensive performance.

  • Torres opened the scoring after just five minutes but Ivan Marcano struck back after the break.
  • Victor Moses put Chelsea ahead again but goals from Gokdeniz Karadeniz and Natcho set up a tense finish.
  • Chelsea were always in command after taking a first-leg lead to Moscow but did not help themselves with some lacklustre marking.
  • Born-again goalscorer Torres opened the scoring with a classy lob after Frank Lampard’s brilliant pass.
  • Chelsea looked solid throughout most of the first-half but began to come under pressure towards the end.
  • And Petr Cech pulled off a superb save just before the break to keep them ahead.
  • Marcano netted a strong header soon after the restart after some woeful Blues defending allowed a cross to come in too easily.
  • Moses hit straight back after some good pressure from Ramires put the hosts under pressure.
  • But Karadeniz struck to give the Russians renewed hope.
  • Natcho’s controversial penalty 15 minutes from time left his side needing two goals to go through.
  • And Marcano and Rondon both missed great headed chances to really turn up the heat.
  • But Chelsea held on to keep alive their European hopes.
